Dermatologists Urge Patients to Hold Off on Copper Peptide Injections Until Human Studies Exist

Dermatologists and longevity researchers are urging patients to stop short of injecting copper peptides, a compound that has moved from face serums to home syringes without a single published human study showing the injectable form is safe or effective. The warning is narrow and worth reading carefully: it is about the route, not the ingredient.

The compound is GHK-Cu, a copper-bound string of three amino acids first isolated in the early 1970s by chemist Loren Pickart, and sold in cosmetic products for decades. What changed is that people are now drawing the electric blue liquid into subcutaneous injections, often stacking it with other repair-marketed peptides bought from sellers outside any regulatory system.

What the topical evidence covers

"The science behind this is very solid," said Dr. David Goldberg, director of cosmetic dermatology for the Schweiger Dermatology Group, who described the peptide as helping bolster collagen and placed it roughly on par with vitamin C and antioxidants. That endorsement covers creams, and he was explicit that it does not extend to needles.

Controlled human research on GHK-Cu has focused almost entirely on skin and aesthetics, with smaller amounts on wound healing and hair growth, and those trials have generally been small and funded by the cosmetics industry. Everything beyond skin sits in animal and laboratory work, including mouse studies by Dr. Warren Ladiges of the University of Washington on aging pathways and Alzheimer's symptoms.

The supply problem

The sharpest concern in the reporting is not pharmacology, it is what is actually in the vial. Most people injecting GHK-Cu buy from unregulated suppliers with no assurance of quality or dosage, according to Dr. Marisa Garshick of MDCS Dermatology, who said whether the product is even a copper peptide is a persistent worry.

Erik Marks, a doctor of nursing practice near Seattle, said his consultations mostly involve patients who already bought and injected the compound online. He reported problems ranging from injection site irritation and infection to elevated liver enzymes and copper levels, while noting it is unclear whether the peptide, another undisclosed substance, or an impurity was responsible.

Why the trials may never come

Ladiges said GHK-Cu occurs naturally in the body, which makes it hard to patent without creating a distinct version and funding trials on it, and in his assessment federal approval is probably never coming. That leaves the compound in a permanent gray zone: interesting enough to keep researchers engaged, unpatentable enough that nobody will pay for the answer.

What regulators do next

Compounding pharmacies in the United States are not technically permitted to offer GHK-Cu for injection in humans, though federal officials have signaled that could change. An FDA advisory panel that recommended reclassifying about half a dozen wellness peptides earlier this summer is scheduled to meet again in February to review the evidence on injectable GHK-Cu.

Bottom line

The topical category has a longer safety record and nothing in the current reporting suggests it is the problem. The injectable version has no published human data, no approval, and a supply chain nobody can vouch for, and clinicians quoted are asking people to wait for February and for the studies.
