GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Rare Sudden Vision Loss, But Absolute Risk Stays Low

A Rutgers-led study published in Annals of Internal Medicine links GLP-1 drugs including Ozempic and Wegovy to a modest increase in ischemic optic neuropathy, a rare condition that can cause sudden vision loss. The lead author put the increase at roughly three to four additional cases per 10,000 patients over 18 months, and says the data does not establish causation.

Doctors Warn GLP-1 and Gym Peptide Users Face Surgery Aspiration Risk, But Advice Is Mixed

A study of more than 47,000 UK surgical patients found those on GLP-1 drugs were 11 times more likely to regurgitate or aspirate under general anesthetic, though the authors say the link is not necessarily causal. Anesthetists say patients are hiding their use, including unapproved peptides bought at the gym, and that the evidence base for pausing the drugs before surgery barely exists.

Expert Panel Urges Eating-Disorder Screening Before GLP-1 Prescribing, But Says Binge-Eating Trials Are Needed

A 45-member expert panel in World Psychiatry reached 91.7% average consensus on recommendations for GLP-1 receptor agonist use in people with eating disorders, including pre-prescription screening. The panel says the drugs should generally be avoided in active anorexia nervosa and restrictive bulimia nervosa, and that trials in binge eating disorder are still missing.

Umbrella Review Finds GLP-1 Drugs Cut Weight in Type 1 Diabetes, But Nausea Risk Triples

An umbrella review of 18 meta-analyses found adjunctive GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy in type 1 diabetes was associated with a 0.23 percent HbA1c reduction and 3.93 kg weight loss, with nausea and vomiting risks roughly tripled. The authors say the results do not support routine use, and note that 19.6 percent primary-study overlap makes the evidence base look larger than it is.
