Telangana's drug regulator has issued a public advisory warning people not to buy or self-administer unapproved weight-loss drugs and experimental peptides sold through Telegram and other online platforms. The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs, known as TG SAFE, said self-administration of such products may lead to serious health complications, including severe adverse reactions, life-threatening complications and even death.
The compounds named in the advisory will be familiar to anyone who reads peptide forums: BPC-157 and GHK-Cu, alongside retatrutide and tesamorelin, all of which TG SAFE said were being sold online. The regulator also said certain medical practitioners in Telangana were offering unapproved drugs including retatrutide and orforglipron for weight-loss treatment.
The research-chemical loophole
The advisory goes directly at the labeling fiction that holds the gray market together. Some platforms market these products as research chemicals with labels stating "Not for Human Consumption", TG SAFE said, while reports indicate certain platforms also supply vials along with instructions or user manuals for self-administration.
The regulator's position is that the label settles nothing. Products marketed as research chemicals or labelled "Not for Human Consumption" must not be treated as approved medicines for human use, the advisory said, and claims about a product's purity, effectiveness or use in research do not establish that it is safe for human administration.
What is actually in the vial
This is the part the sterility argument rests on. TG SAFE said injectable products obtained from unregulated sources might not have been adequately tested for sterility or bacterial endotoxins, posing additional risks of contamination, infection and other serious adverse reactions.
Identity is the second problem. Consumers purchasing such products have no reliable assurance that the contents of the vials correspond to the information stated on the label, the authority said, naming fraudulent, counterfeit or mislabelled products as a risk on platforms including Telegram.
Prescribers are in scope too
TG SAFE directed registered medical practitioners and other healthcare professionals not to procure, prescribe or administer unapproved products for weight loss or other indications. Any such instances will invite stringent action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules made under it, the regulator warned.
Bottom line
TG SAFE's case is not that these peptides have been tested and failed, but that nothing about an unregulated vial can be verified: not safety, efficacy, identity, purity or quality. What the advisory leaves open is enforcement, which it promises against suppliers and practitioners alike without saying how it reaches sellers operating on encrypted messaging apps.
