Allure Editor Tested a $350 Compounded Copper Peptide Cream, But Experts Say Skip It

Allure's beauty editor spent eight weeks testing a compounded GHK-Cu cream obtained through a peptide therapy provider, then asked three experts whether the prescription route was worth it. Their answer was no, and the reporting behind that no is the most useful thing published about copper peptides this year.

GHK-Cu is a copper-binding peptide originally studied for wound healing, now marketed online as the "beauty" peptide. Compounding means a pharmacy prepares a product for one patient from a bulk pharmaceutical ingredient, which the writer assumed meant purer and stronger. Allure notes Hailey Bieber has said the ingredient is amazing, which is roughly the level of evidence most shoppers are working from.

What $350 actually buys

The gifted jar normally retails at $350 and contained 0.5% GHK-Cu. Ethan Melillo, PharmD, of the University of Rhode Island told Allure that a compounded prescription does not automatically make a copper-peptide product stronger or more effective, and that the price can reflect consultation, small-batch labor, packaging and shipping rather than a better ingredient.

For comparison, dermatologist Nancy Samolitis, MD, bought The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% serum for $32 after reading the literature herself. Both of the copper-peptide products she purchased were over the counter.

The one number worth knowing

Samolitis pointed Allure to a published review describing a study of 20 women around age 50, in which creams were applied to the thighs and collagen was measured by biopsy. After one month, collagen production increased in 70% of those treated with GHK-Cu, compared with 50% treated with vitamin C and 40% treated with retinoic acid.

She also flagged the catch: the human studies are small, not randomized controlled trials, and much of the published work comes from the R&D teams of brands selling the ingredient. Her verdict was that it seems to have some promise.

Why the percentage barely matters

Cosmetic chemist Julian Sass, PhD, told Allure there is not enough clinical data to construct a dose-response curve for topical GHK-Cu. pH, vehicle, stability, packaging and delivery all affect performance, which is why he said a well-formulated commercial product is the better bet if you are chasing efficacy.

Bottom line

One person's eight weeks is not evidence, and without a peptide-free version of the same cream there is no way to apportion credit. What the piece establishes is narrower and more valuable: nobody interviewed could name a reason this particular ingredient needs a prescription.
